So it starts snowing this afternoon. This goes completely unnoticed by me since I'm on the couch with the plague. Tracy informed me that Scouts was canceled for Noah because of our "inclement weather". Soon after the phone rings. Piano is also canceled for Abby. Phone rings AGAIN - it's the school district's automated service telling us that we can pick up our kids at any time. Since the school is a whole four blocks from our house, Tracy and I discussed picking them up (aka - laughing and saying, "Who the hell will pick up their kids because of a little snow?!") and decided to let them ride the day out.
Despite conversations in which we would let the kids walk home in the snow to enjoy themselves with Benjy trailing close by in his car, Shelly, who was caught up in a snowy exuberance, walked to the school to pick them up anyway. When the children walked out of the school and saw her, reportedly they yelled, "NOOOOOO!!! We want to walk!" And walk they did!
Here is what I heard after they got in the house and warmed up:
Abby: "Mom! It was so cool! Mrs. Turner left early because of the weather (her teacher lives in Greenville). Then we had about nine people left in class. The phone kept ringing and ringing and kids kept leaving. It was finally down to three kids (in the whole 5th grade) and we got to go in Mr. Moore's class! And, Mom, we still had to do work!"
Noah: "Yeah, Mom! Mrs. Davis left too because she lives in Sherman. We got to go on the computer and visit whatever website wanted! We had a whole hour to do whatever we wanted!!"
So, what's the verdict? Are we terrible parents for letting our kids stay at school or are we good parents for letting our kids experience something a bunch of other kids missed?
P.S. I love that the kids wanted to walk in the snow

that is like every childs dream-and of course they didn't get any work done even though they were supposed to. how fun for them, it was a blast!! you win the award for the best parent!!!
You're not headed down the CPS trail at all. Now, if you hadn't noticed they never came home the next day cuz you were at the demolition derby selling deer jerky that'd be a whole other story.
