Once again, the geniuses who organize all events in Downtown McKinney have struck gold! What an original idea! Oktoberfest! I think someone got confused and mistook our location for the Hill Country, which runs deep with German heritage. North Texas does have some German heritage. Kuby's in Snider Plaza is fantastic & highly recommended, but I digress.
Once upon a time we enjoyed "Harvest Fest", which was fitting. McKinney was, at one time, a virtual hub of the cotton industry. There are photos taken way-back-when with the square full of trucks brimming with the fluffy stuff. Everything around here was farm land --- and not too far in the past either! Harvest Fest in a farming community --- fitting. Oktoberfest in a non-German community --- not fitting.
I will have to admit it was a lot better than the very sad stint of "Arts & Jazz Fest", which - wait - that may happen in the Spring. Good gracious it's lame!
Even though I was slightly irritated and only mildly amused at our new celebration, I took the kids down there. You know, they have to try the beer - just kidding! I think my favorite part, besides the German Folk Dancers, was the fact that there had to be a barricade around the area where beer was sold. It looked like a giant play yard for drunks. Hysterical!
It was sort of fun! We looked in shops, the kids played at the barrel races and jumped on hay bales. We ran into plenty of neighbors and friends. There were lots of things to amuse us!
We came home exhausted & happy!
